TEDxGVSU is a collaborative initiative between Grand Valley State University’s students, faculty, staff, and members of the Greater Grand Rapids community. The conference will feature interdisciplinary speakers - including those from the GVSU community - sharing their past experiences, current projects, and future ideas to promote critical inquiry, innovation, and dialogue. The event will also integrate music, video interludes, live performances, and other surprises to promote the spreading of ideas across multiple mediums.
Why TEDx at GVSU
GVSU is an environment where students have the opportunity to thrive. Everyday, we make choices, turns, decisions that build us into the person we will be at our graduation and into our careers. It’s one thing to exist within a community that gives you chances to dream big, but it’s entirely another to have a personal, internal motivation to be a go-getter for that dream.
TEDx is, at its heart, an inspirer, a motivator, and an invitation to dream bigger. TEDx can bring a spark of inspiration, and at the same time, it can bring an avenue for connectivity. We hope that an event like this will bring people together from different areas, disciplines, and walks of life to form relationships around shared aspirations.
As defined by www.ted.com, TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.
The “x” stands for an independently organized event with a free license granted by TED. Events can be a screening of TED Talks videos, or a combination of live presenters and TED Talks videos. The TEDx Program is designed to help communities, organizations and individuals to spark conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences.
